What is a good typing speed?

Most people type around 40 words per minute. Office work usually needs 50–60, professional typists reach 80+, and competitive typists pass 120. Accuracy matters more than raw speed — a fast test full of errors is slower in real work than a clean, steady one.

How to improve

Use all ten fingers
Home-row position (ASDF–JKL;) keeps your hands still and your eyes on the screen.
Slow down first
Accuracy builds speed. Practise clean, then push the pace.
Short daily practice
Ten minutes a day beats one long session a week.
Don't look at the keys
Cover your hands if you must — touch typing is a muscle skill.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?
One "word" counts as five characters. Correct characters divided by five, divided by minutes typed, gives your WPM.

What is a good accuracy score?
Above 95% is good, above 98% is excellent. If your accuracy drops below 90%, slow down.

How long should a test be?
60 seconds is the standard quick check. Longer tests (3–10 minutes) measure stamina and consistency better.
